RE: Is this a good idea?
Get a soil test (I prefer Kinsey Ag) and add all amendments recommended.
This, along with learning as much as you can from the people on this list,
will give you a great advantage over the other growers.

I'll do you one better, I am a first time grower in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I
have poor prairie soil, lots of windy, exposed land and a couple of guys in
my Bible study that have thrown down the gauntlet in a giant pumpkin growing
contest. My assets: a small rototiller, a good hardware store full of
sacks of manure, I'm good at math and I have two kids 6 and 7 who are kind
of into the idea. The state record in Wyoming is in the 600 pound range, a
reflection of our poor soil, wind and growing conditions. My job is too
good to move to a greener place and I love it here. Needless to say,
gardening is a challenge here. Anyone have suggestions how I could teach
these guys a lesson in giant horticulture?
