RE: Laemmle color
Mike-you mention "the 567.5 would throw some orange and some red".

Since the 567.5 seeds had only 50% Laemmle genes,I think it is amazing that
the red-orange has carried through as well as it has,to several generations
in some cases.
616 Holland 91--575.5 Dill 88 x 467 Thompson 89
I don't know how much color the 616 may have contributed to the 567.5
offspring but it looks to me that the Laemmle color sure is the biggest
part.
Other factors may be that the "male pollinator usually determines the
offsprings color".Many growers believe this and I think I have seen it
too.Always exceptions of course.
Also,perhaps the red-orange genes are dominate over other colors.Do you
recall if the genetics people have mentioned this?
In any case the AG top gene pool will continue to advance and
improve.Improvements will be made by hundreds-thousands of growers selecting
various seeds for their own good reasons.Collectively this makes an awesome
force producing more good crosses every year.
On color,I think I have seen that the "green genes" are recessive to all
other colors.Was this covered by the genetics people?
In summary,in AGs,is red dominate and green recessive and all other colors
somewhere in between?
I hope genetic specialists will step in and comment on this too--AE

I think that you could be right. I am not sure as the 567.5mom would throw
some orange(B-gene) and some red orange so Iam not sure it was fixed yet.
Willemese seems to have the B gene nice orange fixed ......but its not
dominant
OR perhaps the red gene does not have dominance over the B gene. If we were
selecting for the red gene we would save the red orange seeds and use them
only . Hard to tell if the red orange dominate the color of the next
generation but I think theres a heavy influence. Throwing mostly nice
orange and red orange. Hek you look at prize winners and they all have the
red gene fixed. Its doable........
I think that squash breeder hit the nail on the head when she said we should
try and get the fruit to be green and then turn bright red orange at
maturity. Because thats what we have been trying to accomplish breeding in
squash for weight. And perhaps its there photosynsis skin that makes them
heavy. But we are learning an ended up with a lot of mixed colors. Giving
the gpc ruling a workout. I think the orange --B Gene ---has to be selected
out and the red/orange predomently used and selfed.
There are a bunch of great red orange pumpkins out there
Stucker 731.......David Bhaskaran has been doing some great red orange work.
Bob Troys is nice .......Eric Carlson........you all know the red/orange
they stand out. Get those seeds and self them on the side for Halloween
lets do that for a while and when some one thinks they got the red gene
fixed.................pass out the seeds to many to plant for Halloween and
see if the all end up red orange.........
Then if the green folks do the same for green ....it would be cool to cross
and see what happens.......
