Re: help needed
Debbie : The age group will tell how sophisticated your talk should be. We
do school tours all the time and we have a puppet show on how to grow. It's
a spoof on what a pumpkin needs. We use rabbit puppets and have a script
based on whether it is magic growing dust that makes the pumpkins grow. Call
it a "MAGIC SEED" and go from there. It needs sun, fertilizer, rain and lots
of care to grow.
If the group is older, I highlight the use of good compost and get the kids
to help me decide what should and what should not go in the composter bin.
Then we talk a little about soils and PH and fertilizers. Then, I give them
a seed and tell them how we control the pollination and how the mother and
father's names are on the outside of the seed package. Then tell them about
the male and female flower on the same plant. The pollination process. Then
tell them how to start the seed and the process until it is in the garden
and growing. Caring for the plant and a picture of Geneva's 1262 before and
after sculpturing. Then I give them a prize list of the local weigh-off. We
just finished an agricultural course for all the grade 6ers in our county ,
which we call The Roots Of Bruce. We had 605 kids. Hope this helps. Dave
