re:22X24 patch, running plants toward one another, culling slower pumpkin. What do you think?

Since I am very limited on space, I'm thinking of running two plants
from opposite ends of the garden toward each other and then removing the
plant with the slower growing pumpkin. Since my space is 22 X 24, I
thought that I'd run one plant down the middle, Xmas tree fashion, and
then from the opposite end I'd try the flag pattern. That way my plants
won't really meet until later--I figure around the 18th day after
pollination, if all goes according to plans. The question, though, is
CAN YOU TELL IF A PUMPKIN WILL EVER AMOUNT TO ANYTHING WHEN IT'S ONLY 18
DAYS OLD? I'm thinking you can, but having never grown anything REALLY
big, I'm not sure. What do you think?
