I have done exactly what you are talking about. I had a space, only big
enough for one plant, but started 2 of them from opposite ends. My space
was as long as yours, but only half as wide. It turns out that I left them
both in. I couldn't tell which would do better until about a month in. I
think this really caused too much crouding, not enough circulation of air to
dry out the soil, and a great place for bugs to live and eat leaves. I had
so much aphid poop by the end of the year that it looked like honey had been
poured on the leaves and ground in some areas. I understand the fear of
only growing one plant.

Since I am very limited on space, I'm thinking of running two plants
from opposite ends of the garden toward each other and then removing the
plant with the slower growing pumpkin. Since my space is 22 X 24, I
thought that I'd run one plant down the middle, Xmas tree fashion, and
then from the opposite end I'd try the flag pattern. That way my plants
won't really meet until later--I figure around the 18th day after
pollination, if all goes according to plans. The question, though, is
CAN YOU TELL IF A PUMPKIN WILL EVER AMOUNT TO ANYTHING WHEN IT'S ONLY 18
DAYS OLD? I'm thinking you can, but having never grown anything REALLY
big, I'm not sure. What do you think?
