Re: Soil Results

According to my research your soil may be almost perfect. I
would need your CEC, ph and sodium reading to make a better
determination however.

If your Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC)is at or near 30, you
have black gold in your patch. Higher CEC's mean the soil can
hang on to more cation's so higher levels of the major cations
are normally found and are not a problem as long as they are in
balance. The higher the CEC reading generally, the better the
soil.

I computed the base saturation of your major cations and they
are in almost perfect balance. I would need your sodium level
to be more accurate. When your cationic elements are balanced,
maximum biological activity and plant growth is possible.

The recommended percentage levels for each cation and what I
computed for your sample is as follows:

Potassium: Optimum 5-7% your sample 3%
Magnesium: Optimum 10-15% your sample 11%
Calcium: Optimum 70-80% your sample 83%
Sodium: Optimum less than 3% your sample ??

As for Phosphorus, there are no toxic levels of P although no
increase in crop response is noted in soils above 60PPM unless
your ph is out of wack. Then a higher P level is desirable.

So bottom line - if you CEC is around 30 you are in excellent
shape. I would add 1 pound per 200 square feet of Sulphate of
Potash to bump your Potassium level up a little. Calcium
leaches rather quickly out of the soil and so will naturally
drop over time. For god's sake don't add any gypsum or lime.

good luck,

vince
