There are as many methods to water and fertilize as there are growers on
this list. Yours sounds pretty reasonable to me. I would just watch out
for the dissolved fertilizers re-crystallizing and blocking your drip
emitters. You may need more than 55 gallons when your plants get large!
If you are using municipal water, let it sit in the drum as long as possible
before watering the plants. If possible, you are better off using water
from a river or a stream. I have heard that pond water can have some
negative effects, but know several heavy hitters that have used ponds for
their water supplies many years with few problems. Several others collect
their rain runoff in huge tanks or swimming pools. This is a whole other
discussion though.
Also, living in the Midwest, you need to consider cooling your plants on hot
days. Many growers use misters to accomplish this in addition to their
regular watering routine.
Hope this helps!

Hello all
How do you water and or fertilize your pumpkins? Do you use overhead
sprinklers or do you set up some type of irrigation system. Since Im
limited on space I thought I could set up a 55 gal plastic barrel with a
spigot and run a irrigation line to each plant and run some drip
emitters around the base of each plant I could add emitters as the
season grows on this way I thought I could mix fertilizer in the barrel.
Any suggestions??
Steve
