Re: Soil test any comments would be helpful

Hi Gene,

I will take a shot at your soil test - My comments are as
follows:

First of all K (potassium)and Mg (magnesium) are too high. Too
much K can be toxic to soil microbes and plants. Too much Mg
cements clay soils together and can cause Phosphate, and
Nitrogen deficencies as well as other problems.

The best corrective action is adding lots of gypsum which helps
leach out Mg and K and also adds calcium to improve your
cationic balance. (base saturation) I would broadcast 10 lbs
gypsum/100sq ft. and till it in.

The organic matter in the soil is also low, I would shoot for
at least 10%. To help correct this I would apply at least 5
cubic yards of good quality compost per 1,000 square feet of
patch. This will also help to improve your CEC. I would avoid
manures this close to planting time.

The ph is toward the top of the range I like to see. I would
add 2 lbs/100sq feet of soil sulfer to help knock it down a
bit.

Hope this helps,

vince
