Its still raining here, and more in sight. Some floods are abating, but with
light showers now and heavier rain forecast tonight and tomorrow, I dont' see
much chance of planting! I transplanted my pumpkins into a variety of pots:
3-lb. coffee containers, 2-gallon tree pots; 1-gallon milk jugs. I did the
split-them-first-and-tape-them-back-together-before-you-plant thing, so we'll
see how it works. I did save one of each seed in case of disaster, so I can
still replant up till about the first of June if necessary. I made up my mind
this morning that I'd just plant two pumpkins in the mud, in garden. I walked
down to the garden spot, and went in the mud over the tops of my Chuck
Taylor's, so gave that up for a better day. The pumpkins-in-the-jugs are
sitting out, enjoying this fine misty rainy day. I'm miserable but they're
having fun. If the dog will just refrain from eating the potting soil
again...
I sprouted my seeds by filing first as directed by the experts, then planted
them in 4" peat pots, then set them in an ice chest. I added a 40 watt bulb
in a desk lamp, and plugged that into an outlet which was wired into a
thermostat, and covered it all with a baby quilt. I kept a hi-lo thermometer
in there to check on the temperature, which stayed at 85 to 90 degree. In 36
hours they were up and out of the pots. My pumpkin incubator worked like a
charm. All but one seed sprouted, and it was a complete dud, when I checked
it, there was nothing inside.
cheers,
duchess of gladstone

We got some rain here in St. Louis right after I planted. Whew! Just in time.
Nothing like Diana got in Gladstone though.
It's just a bit cool at 55 degrees this morning but is supposed to be 80 by
Friday.
I had germinated mine in rolled paper Cups, kept warm over a heating pad. It
worked great and all 10 seeds have germinated.
I hope I didn't transplant too early because as soon as the cotyledons came
up, I stuck them outside. I tore parts of my paper pots apart for easier
root
penetration even though a few had already started sending roots through the
bottom of the folded pots. They've gotten noticeably bigger but only 3 or 4
have regular leaves sprouting too. It got cool after the few days of rain we
had. I think the Kansas rain petered out somewhat by the time it made it's
way
here so we in St. Louis had only nice mild rain for 2 days.
Now it just needs to warm up so we can COOK some Chlorophyll in the sun!

I germinated 5 seeds on tax day under a 450 watt high pressure sodium
setup. I got my third true leaf on them yesterday. I put them on top of lots
of compost and uncomposted material. I built new hot houses this year and
until today didn't need them. We had 80's this weekend but it has cooled
considerably today. Expecting upper 40's at night here in Hoosierland for a
few days. I'm glad I built new hothouses! I maintained 68 degrees F last
night so I think I can pull it off. We are expecting a bit of sun tomorrow
so I may line the hills with tar paper or some black plastic thus trapping
some heat for the night.
I was wondering if anyone has fungi or mold problems in a hothouse
situation? I built in vents for this reason but would like to be proactive.
Already worrying about the darn things and it is only April. This hobby has
grayed my beard!
Glad to hear 80's are on the way Richard!
Good luck to you all this season!
Steve Haberman
