George,
Is this to say that you normally plant your seed around April 15? Once
the snow melts I will be putting up my temporary greenhouse. I wasn't
planning to plant until the beginning of May. What are the advantages
of planting sooner?

My feelings:
** I like to take advantage of the long days to get a head start.
** The plants are bigger and stronger when the Squash Vine Borer hits, and I
think they can tolerate more damage.
** It is sometimes very cool here in late August and September, making it
difficult to add much size after August 15.
** I like the Pumpkin to stop growing about one week before picking. They
hold up better and loose less weight when the skin has hardened.
** Easier to get a head start by protecting a small plant than trying to
protect a huge one in the Fall to get more size.
** See more info on Dan’s Pumpkin page under my Direct Start Method.
Good Luck
George
