Rick,
Not a bad idea to query the list and get some demographics...
I live here in central PA and have about 5 years experience growing Atlantic
Giants. I lived out in New Mexico for a period of time and while there won
the New Mexico State Fair prize for the biggest pumpkin (a whopping 129
pounder). I had serious concern that when I showed up at the Fair one of the
"heavy hitters" would look at my prize pumkin and say something like "cute
little pie pumpkin you got there, boy". Well needless to say that did not
happen and I have been hooked on the hobby since.
When I think back to last year, I must have made every mistake possible.
The biggest screw up was rotating the pumpkin to get it nicely shaped and
boy did I ever stress the vine. I have learned a lot about pumpkin growing
since I started surfing the net. Hopefully all the good theory will
translate to results this year. My biggest limitation is space. My pumpkin
patch is "only" about 500 square feet. Given my spatially challanged
circumstances my goal is a 400 pounder this year.
I am going to try the George Brooks method of direct seed starting with a
heating cable and mini-greenhouse this year. I have not had good luck with
transplanting in the past and the direct start method made sense to me.
