The Things We Do

Tomorrow I will be building my Pumpkin Mounds just before a heavy rain storm
comes in at night. The soil was tilled during a 2 or 3 day window I had
before a record breaking blizzard on April 1st. This allowed the soil to
recover quicker because tilled soil warms and drains faster. In the Spring
it’s critical to watch the soil daily and till 15 minutes after the soil is
ready because you don’t know if it will freeze solid again in a few days. I
need to get the seeds planted by the end of next week if I’m to have enough
time to grow my Pumpkin. So tonight when I got home the patch was in good
shape and I covered it with blankets so I can get an early start tomorrow and
not have to wait until the nights frost is gone. I will build the mounds
adding amendments to the soil as I go. The heating cables and glass covers
will be added also. The Compost piles that go beside the mounds will be
added over the next 2 weeks. This has been one of the coldest April starts I
can remember. The other day we broke the all time record low high with a 33,
that record went back to 1916. I will keep you posted of my progress and
weather conditions so you can see what I’m dealing with and make comparisons
to your conditions.
