Mack,
I grow pumpkins commercially, besides the large ones. I have planted in
hills and rows, but usually rows. Some people have a misconception as to what
a hill is. A hill is a group of seeds. Last year I planted a few acres in
hills. Every 10 feet, I planted 5 seeds in a group. The hills were in a 10
foot checkerboard pattern so I could weed with machines in both directions.
It works fine. A hill is not soil mounded up, just a group of seeds. Planting
seeds on an actual hill of soil makes the water run away from the plants when
you are watering. I have planted my large ones on a hill or raised bed, when
conditions were too wet and I had run out of time. The soil last year was
saturated and it was well in to May and I hadn't transplanted anything. I
hilled the soil up to keep the new roots out of standing water. Under normal
conditions, I wouldn't do it.
