This morning I went out to see how my seeds were doing in their plastic bags
wrapped in moist paper in my 80-85 degree "germinating box." The Zehr 1061s I
got from Ray Waterman were just sitting there doing nothing. I was feeling
glum even though they had only been in my rigged up box for 48 hours.
Tonight, 12 hours later, they had developed roots 2 to 3 inches long. This
was amazing to me and also points out why these Atlantic Giants can get root
bound very quickly if left in containers. The 1061 is more vigorous than any
other seed I have germinating and as I had two seeds gave me 100%
germination. Needless to say I am very happy. My Greer 1006 has done nothing
so far but I am hoping to see some action by tomorrow.
I have found that it is better to germinate in a tight mesh cloth rather than
a paper towel as the root becomes attached to the towel. It grows into it.
For an impatient person this method of germinating is very satisfying. I
think it raises the success rate also.
