I don't understand why one would have to use a special potting medium
(the types that are made free from bacteria) when germinating their
seeds. When planting and germinating using the direct method there
doesn't seem to be any concern about the soil being sterile. I had
trouble last year (being a rookie) with the potting medium drying out
much faster then the soil around it once I planted the sprouted seeds. I
would check the patch soil and find it moist while the potting soil
would be nearly dried out. This year I want to use the soil that is in
the garden for my indirect seed germinating. Anyone see a problem in
doing it this way. Let's call it the "Indirect Direct Method."
