Re: Urban growers

There is hope for the urbanite grower!
During the Ottawa St. Lawrence Growers Seminar two guest speakers addressed
this subject. Bill Fornof's method using sand in a large container placed in
a pit in the ground yielded him a 701 lb. pumpkin last year. While Bill was
not present his methods were relayed. Using a large 50 gal type container
placed directly in the ground he then filled it with sand. The plants were
fed regularly using a hydroponics feeding technique. The vines grew out over
plastic which was covered with sand or pea gravel, from the pictures it
appeared none of the vines were buried. The guest speakers method's used had
secured them pumpkins over 600 lbs. Digging a hole in their lawn they filled
the hole with rich well balanced soil. The plant was then allowed to grow
out over their lawn. Again no vines were buried and if I recall correctly
they also used a fairly low dose but regular fert. program. I think I am
going to try this method this year in an experimental area. I can always
replant the front lawn next year!
