Sanding Seeds?

I saw someone mention sanding the seeds to help them open
more quickly.  I assume that we're talking about sanding
the edges to make the seed covers part more easily.
My daughter and I are doing some experiments for her
science project so we're looking at trying multiple
methods of seed germination. I don't have access to the web 
right now or I'd look at the FAQ.  Can someone just send
me a brief rundown on how to go about sanding a seed?
