Smitty,
Damping off means the seed has rotted in the ground or in your starting
pot! It is often caused by to much moisture in the soil or contaminated
soil. Fungal Spores etc. The best way to tell if your seed has damped off
is to gently dig around the seed. I use an ice pick, if the seed has
damped off you will find a moldy or rotten seed which never germinated! You
can coat the seed before you plant it with anti fungal powder such as
Captan or mix this in the soil around the immediate area you are going to
plant. This more often than not works but not guaranteed. I do not use
Captan when seed starting as I have found that just keeping the soil
slightly moist and not overwatering works fine.
Hope this helps!
