Medicine Hat Update - April 27

Despite a bit of a setback the pumpkin growing season is off to a
pretty good start in Medicine Hat. The Andersen 977 seedling that
germinated on April 1st was damaged and would only grow 1 true leaf. A
second 977 seed failed to germinate after a week so I switched to a pair
of the Andersen 815's. They germinated in 48 hours and were placed in
peat pots on April 14th. On April 20th I planted one of the seedlings
into the cold frame and kept one on a sunny window sill as a backup. At
that point they were identical. One week later and you will not believe
the difference. The one in the cold frame is huge with several leaves,
one of which is fully 9 inches across.

You can check out some photos on my web site at
"http://www2.memlane.com/bkournikakis". Look in the growers log for the
current photos. There is also a link off the log (near thebottom) to
photos and a description of my coldframe.

I would have provided an update sooner, but my daughter Zoe was sick
last week with "Coxsackie virus" and I had something (possibly the same
virus but I didn't get any nasty looking spots) that kept me home for
most of the week and not feeling up to doing much of anything.
