YES, Just put the pointed end down with the root attached.

If the roots were showing, then it will take only a few days.  If your broke off the roots, then you could be SOL.

I use shoplights always before I plant them in the ground.

No reason to. The key thing to remember is not to let the pots get root bound.  Most of the time you should use one gallon pots versus 4 inch pots.  If you know what you are doing, then 4 inch pots are ok.

Why do you break off the roots.  Don't touch the roots. Don't touch the roots. Don't touch the roots.
