There's been a lot of talk about server space, bandwidth, etc. on the
list over the past week, so I thought I'd clear some things up.
Mallorn Computing (my company (and pretty much just me :) ) will host
the archives and the mailing list as long as we possibly can. We don't
want money from subscribers -- the reason that we support this list is
because we want to spread horticultural knowledge. This should be a free
service to everyone. (Besides, taking money makes taxes such a pain :)
Our goal is to share horticultural knowledge so that other growers
can benefit from your experiences in years to come. For this reason
we whole-heartedly agree with Duncan about keeping items like seed bidding
off of the list. If I were to play the role of a visionary, I'd say the
best way to do this kind of thing would be to set up a Web site somewhat
akin to EBay, but a little friendlier (and hopefully more secure).
If you really want to repay us for the bandwidth and 144 megabytes of
archives, send us some customers. :) Seriously, if you know of someone
looking to do some advertising or a grower who wants to set up a Web site,
send them our way. That's the best way that you repay us.
Well, that's all that I have to say about it, except thanks to Dan Gardner
for setting up this list many many moons ago, and for realizing when he
didn't have the time to administer it anymore. And thanks to Duncan for
moderating the list for all of us.
Happy pumpkining!
Chris
