Southern California Planting Times?

I live in San Diego County and was wondering when I should plant. Last year
I planted July 4th and my pumpkins wilted away with 20 days to spare before
Halloween. I grew 7 pumpkins off 3 plants that were all 120+. Should I plant
early? Summer temps can easily hover around 90-95 degrees with some spells
into the 105+ plus range. We live inland from the coast.
