Thanks for asking. Rock Rivard has been checking with growers on the
data for some fruits and finding errors. All these terms apply to
pollination in any species.
Open pollen or open or open pollination means nature did the pollination
and the parents are more or less unknown. A beekeeper suggested the
pollen could be from a plant a mile or more away, but probably nearby.
self means you hand pollinated with pollen from a male flower on the
same plant.
sib means you hand pollinated with pollen from a plant grown from the
same pumpkin fruit.
cross means you used pollen from a different plant which was from a
different fruit.
In all cases the female flower was protected from insects before and
after hand pollination but using a paper bag. I also protect the male
flower or collect it before insects get to it. Blackberry polle will
keep for a year in the freezer, but corn doesn't; I do not know how long
pumpkin pollen will keep. Corn pollen is viable only about 20 hours.
