wild idea on aerating soil

I just had a wild idea.  If double-digging aids plant growth by loosening
and aerating soil, why not *force* air (in moderate amounts) through the
soil via buried pipes?

I do this with my compost heap and it appears to help.

Does anyone have thoughts about why this would help/hurt a growing pumpkin?
