How about giving us beginners a crash course in growing these
things. I would be interested in hearing some of your tips and advice.
Example; how do you slow them down, how do you force them ect.

Bill,
My opinion is that you can't speed up the growth of a pumpkin (push it),
(squeeze every inch out of it). The name of the game is to provide optimum
conditions for growth. Some might like to believe they have their hand on the
throttle....I don't believe it. A plant is going to grow as it wishes
providing the life support is there. If a plant has adequate water, watering
it more won't speed it up. If a plant has optimum nutrients, giving it twice
as much will not speed it up. If you totally deprive it of water, cut of all
the leaves or sever the root system you could slow it down.....lord only
knows why someone would do that. The pumpkin growth is in the hands of the
genetics , the climate and your ability to provide optimum soil conditions
and nutrition. So don't worry about trying to keep your hand on the throttle.
Keep it on the hoe, the rototiller and the watering hose. Good luck!
