Pumpkinguy,
I too, have several 1000 watt bulbs, 1 MH & 1 HPS. They truly are
amazing.
HID lamps such as these produce considerable amount of UV-A,B light
which
is why they are packaged as bulb in bulb units. The outer bulb has UV
absorbents making the bulbs safe to be around (heat not withstanding).
If the
outer bulb should break or crack it is highly recommended the bulb be
discarded for safety reasons.
I have toyed with idea of connecting these lamps to my computer and
working
the appropriate formulas into the control software, but I'm A) not sure
even
these lamps are bright enough to promote good growth over the AG, B)
concerned about operating cost and C) concerned the neighbors will shoot
me or the bulbs :-).
I enjoyed your response on fluorescent lights and subsequent discussion.
