Thank you, Ohio Valley Growers!
I want to thank all the great folks in Ohio for a rip-roaring good time at
the 2000 Ohio Valley Patch Tour. The patches were marvelous. I was taking
notes as fast as I could… now we’ll see if I can apply some of my newfound
knowledge. I do know some of those cats have pumpkins NOW that I would be
happy with at weighoff!
Perhaps even better than seeing the patches was the opportunity to meet a
wonderful community of pumpkinheads. The hosting growers were as nice a
bunch of people as you could ever imagine. Dick Baird, Tim Parks, Al
Gibson, Fred Calai, Dave Stelts, and ALL those Lantermans (!) sure know how
to throw a party. I was a first-time attendee, but was warmly welcomed. It
had the feel of a big, happy family reunion. And the featured growers were
terrific – Winston Wycoff, Nic Welty, Bill Moss, Fred “The King” Calai, and
of course Dick Baird – are all pumpkin pros in the purest sense of the word.
It was especially terrific to meet celebs Jack and Sherry LaRue, Len
Stellpflug, Hugh Wiberg, and our own cyber-Paul McIntyre, to visit with all
my Pennsylvania buddies and to meet so many of the listers and their
families and friends - Brad, Scott, the inimitable Dan and Beth Carlson,
John, Andy, Jim G., Jim K., Dewight, Alan (oh no, I just know I’m gonna
forget somebody here, please forgive me). It was also fascinating to meet a
good number of list-lurkers – Jeff, Gene, Winston, Jim.
I highly recommend that each of you mark your 2001 calendars for this annual
event. You can’t beat it.
Thanks again everybody! I had a fabulous time. See you next year!
Beth Rado
