Hi Josh! 
  I think Glenn is correct, purple loosestrife is not
a thistle.The pinkish purple flowers grow in shape of
"spikes". First let's identify what you have! I have
pictures and info on loosestrife that I will e-mail
you as soon as I find it. Hang in there!
