Re: Stem Stress

John,

I had a late pumpkin grow completely upside down in the patch. I really didn't care about it because it was late and I had all the pumpkins I needed for the weigh off and for Halloween. I let it grow just to see what it would do. It was even getting wet under the pumpkin and the blossom end ( which was facing straight up ) was forming a bird bath !
I just dug a little bit of soil out from under the stem and vine and let it go.   Surprisingly, it grew to around 300 pounds and did very well even though I gave it little attention. I expected it to be a rotten mess underneath but it was ok.

I have a pumpkin that is 94" in circumference.  The problem is that the stem is low on the pumpkin.  Instead of raising the vine, it is pushing the vine down and "crimping" it.  I thought about digging a shallow hole to relieve the stress.  Does anyone have suggestions for a pumpkin like this. John PritchardCanal Winchester, OH
