Late Fruit Set

I have heard of growers intentionally setting a fruit late in the season to
encourage the plant to keep pumping in the hopes that it would keep the
juice flowing to the main pumpkin.  Has anyone tried setting a late pumpkin
for this purpose and had anything to show for it?
