Hi Ken
This years Marshfield Fair weigh-off had a very small showing. Only three
pumpkins were entered compared to last years 13. The weight of the heaviest
pumpkin was nearly 250 pounds less than last year. This was mostly due to the
weather in N.E. this year. Several growers were in attendance that didn't
bring a pumpkin because either they had nothing to bring, or they were saving
what they had for the Topsfield Fair. The general consensus among the growers
was that it has been a tough year.
I took first prize with a pumpkin that weighed 403 pounds. Tim Donovan took
second at 385 pounds, and a gentleman from the Cape Cod area was third with a
pumpkin that weighed 175 pounds. ( Sorry didn't get his name)
It should be noted that two pumpkins arrived at the fair an hour after the
weighoff. One of them was over 500 pounds, the other in the high 300s. One of
my neighbors gave me this news later that evening. I don't know at this time
who the growers were. I have heard that they were from Connecticut. I wish
that they had made it on time. Whoever the grower of the larger pumpin was
deserves first prize.
