Re: The Doucet Theory on Pumpkin’s with Split Personalities

Diana,

The hot air idea is interesting and stimulating. I don't necessarily
agree with the air permeation idea . I did a experiment a year ago I
stuck a thermometer into the flesh of a pumpkin in the morning 44 degrees
left it in full sun and at the end of the day was 53. My temps here are
42-90 It takes a great deal to heat up the mass of a pumpkin. Since this
experiment I do not shade my pumpkins and let them warm during the day and
then try and trap the heat during the night with a blanket. So in the
morning they don't take all day to warm up so they can start rocking
earlier. I know many growers that shade and blanket their pumpkins
religiously trying to maintain a even temp. and still sag rings occur as
well as holes. Therefore i would place more weight on genetic
predispositions and shape of the the pumpkin, as well as rapid growth and
the inability of the pumpkin wall to hold the water weight. If your
experiment was done with a stronger structured can and less heat would it
still crumple??
