Soft is not good... right?
About 2 weeks ago I trimmed my vines and have had some interesting
results... The largest my Burpee Prizewinner that was at 51" quit growing
but several small pumpkins on other vines have really taken off and have
now surpassed it. Everything seemed fine yesterday but today I noticed
that the smallest, about basketball size, seemed to have blemishes in the
skin - almost looked like the orange color had pealed off and left ivory
flakes in it place - but the skin was smooth, just discolored. The
pumpkin seemed "soft", not really mushy, but not firm either. Earlier in
the season I had one that wasn't developing too fast and seemed soft also.
It too was culled immediately. Other than that everything seems fine - no
signs of bugs, {except the good kind - praying mantis & ladybugs} or of any
mildew or wilt. I suppose I should go ahead and pull the vine that the
soft one was on out too - any ideas as to the cause or what I may want to
do different would be appreciated. Also will it hurt to leave the one
that appears to have quit growing on the vine in hopes that it may start
again? Thanks, Jetta {first time grower from VA}
