Re: Help Squirles
I had the same problem two years ago. A squirrel
developed a taste for the vine tips and took nips off
the young pumpkins.
Try covering the young pumpkins with an old tee-shirt,
a sheet or remay. The vine tips are harder but if you
obtained some floating row cover (Remay) and covered
all the tips of the vines that might discourage them.
In my case, the squirrel started eating the vines,
even digging up the ones I had buried. What finally
ended the problem was a brief discussion with my
pellet gun.
We have hundreds of squirrels here. There was only one
which developed a taste for the vines. Usually they
don't bother them.
Haven't had the vine eating problem since but every
year they like to test the pumpkins to see how ripe
they are by biting chunks out of them. Covering them
has stopped that problem.
good luck,
vince
