How to tell if I'm doing better or worse than last year?

Howdy, fellow pumpkineers-

Hopefully one of you with more years in this than me can answer this
question...
What have you found to be a better indication of your fruit's
ultimate/mature size-

size since pollination
-or -
size on a particular calendar day

To help you understand my question-
Right now, I've taken some 20 day fruit measurements and I'm behind last
year's best 20 day measurement, HOWEVER, it's also 10 days earlier in the
year (I was able to pollinate earlier this year). In another 10 days, I
will surely surpass my weight from last year on the same calendar day.
So how am I doing? Better or worse than last year?
