I think that "size since pollination" is a better
EARLY indicator than "size on a particular
calendar day". You mentioned that you
pollinated 10 days earlier this year, so yes
you might expect a bigger pumpkin on a
given calendar day. Suppose you pollinated
even earlier (5 or 10 days earlier), all other
things being equal, you will have even a bigger
pumpkin on that given calendar day. However
even though your pumpkin may be bigger
earlier it may stop growing well before the
weigh-off. "Size since pollination" establishes
a rate-of-growth that we can use to compare
with other pumpkins on the plant. I consider
this info along with the shape and position
on the vine when it comes time to do a cull.
Vince is right, these pumpkins do have a
mind of their own, sometimes the one that
is lagging at day 20 or 30 is the one that comes
on strong at the finish...........the unknown,
thats what makes this sport so challenging
and exciting.
