I use half of a sheet of styrafoam insulation under mine. I've used both half inch and inch. I like the inch thick. I used a nail to put a few small holes in it where the pumpkin will sit so any water can drain. I put mine on when they were basketball size, be very careful of the vine, I cut the tap roots under the stem at this time. I got help, I watched the vine by standing in front of it and lifting the pumpkin while my helper slid the styrafoam under.
