I've found it best to cut the tap root at the stem and the one on either
side as soon as you know your going to keep the pumpkin. How many more
adjacent taps you cut as the pumpkin grows depends primarily on the stem
(length, position to the vine, and angle to the pumpkin) and shape of the
pumpkin (tall shoulders, low "blob", football, wagon wheel, etc.). So
long as you can wiggle the vine easily on either side of the stem your
okay. If the vine ever feels "tight" then cut the next tap.

List,
When is the best time to begin easing stem and/or vine stress by clipping
underneath taproots? The pumpkin is at
11 days and 30" in circ. I want the timing to be right. It doesn't appear
to be in any stress now.
