Stump Rot

I have a problem,  today i noticed on the plant supporting my largest fruit that the stump was going slightly soft (muchy soft) on the sides.  The plant still appears healthy and sound.  I have cut down the moisture supply to the plant and appplied a fungicide paste to the area, did i do right???  The stump have had my eye on the stump for a while as getting very knobbly.  Hopefully only a minor problem and it will still keep growing.
