Hi:

New to the list, actually not new just new posting.  Have been reading all
the posts for a while now.

Backyard growers from Little Silver, NJ.  I want to know how the pumpkin is
measured is it the widest part of the pumpkins circumference or stem to stem.

Thanks,
Pat O'Connell

Pat there is 2 ways to measure a pumpkin.
First the circumference is like measuring your waist. Measure even to the ground and around the biggest part of the pumpkin. (sort of like measuring your waist). Being new if you hit 122 inches around you are at the 400 pound mark. One hell of a pumpkin for anyone who doesn't do this every day (including in thier sleep).
The next measurement is the Over the top method. First you do the circumferance measurement, then you measure from the ground by the stem over the top to the blossem end and all the way to the ground and record that measurement.
Third you measure from one side of the pumpkin (starting at the ground) all the way to the other side of the pumpkin at the ground. (this third measurement is side to side).
You add the 3 measurements and the total is Your over the top measurement.
If your total measurement is as follows. This is pretty close
268 400
292 500
310 600
329 700
346 810
I don't want to go any higher that that because this is a really old list (Leonard Stellpflug wrote it in 1994). For the most part it has been within 10%, above that, there had only been grown a few pumpkins grown that big.
Good Luck
