Kathy, from the sound of it, you may be
experiencing the same thing which has plagued me over the years of gardening in
Sonoma county. No its not the cucumber beetles, my pumpkins seem to have
reached a peaceful co-existence with them, and there's lots of them. It's
not mosaic virus, or bacterial wilt, both of which I blamed at one time for mid
season symptoms similer to yours. It's the adobe soil which runs rampant
through our area! Lack of good drainage combined with even regular
watering can easily lead to the roots and stump rotting, which could explain
your dilema. That's my theory at least. You might check out the
stump under the soil surface and see if its firm and healthy. If not,
there's lots of things you can do for next year but it may be too late for this
