Unlike the equipment used by the US Postal Service, food is irradiated with
gamma rays. This kills all of the bacteria and fungus present but does not
cook or have any noticable effect on the food. The food does not give off
any radiation after it is exposed just as your body does not give off
x-rays after you are x-rayed. I believe this would extend the life of a
pumpkin but to get really good results, it would have to be sealed in
plastic or some air tight container.
