Nothing weed free

In field condtions we use “yellow” (Prowl or Treflan) herbicides normally used for Cotton or Soybeans. Most prefer Prowl on Pumpkins. Most use half the cotton rate, but some use full rate. Pumpkins are hurt somewhat, quite possibly, so is the Cotton, but hurt less than the weeds.

This year we used new Product called Sandia and our yellow herbicides. The name is Spanish for watermelon and it is labeled for both. It work great until we row watered and then the little weeds came up in the row. It did keep the weeds down till the patch was grown over so that most weeds would not come through. We wicked and sprayed roundup through much of the field. Then have hoed some, but overall this is the best weed program we have found.

The Sandia should be applied after planting and prior to emergence “over the top”. Next year they hope to label it over the top after emergence. The chemical does need light incorporation with tillage, rainfall, or irrigation.

The problem with it

  1. expense-$40 per acre custom applied, A gallon covered our 50 acres but was $800 for the chemical.
  2. Chemical applicators license required.

3.                 Incorporation.

4.                 Not going to kill big weeds (foot tall).

Next year company hopes to label post emergence, if this works like roundup ready cotton it could be real advantage to current practices.
