Re: long gourd

List members,

Concerning "long gourds", the key to growing is a watering program.  Limit the plant to a manageable size and allow just 2-3 gourds.  You will be concerned with the main root system only because that is what you have allowed by using a trellis.  The fruit should be small at this time.  If not prune to a couple of young specimens.  Select the most elongated gourds.  Some plants have better genetics than others.  I used a sprinkler can per plant in the morning and again at night - religiously!  If a big rain, back-off.  But, go right back at in a short while.  Keep this program going until the fruit stops or harvest.  Secure the stem of the gourd with a twine before the vine to help support.  Be sure to set fruit high enough to grow straight down.  This gourd is night flowering so some hand pollination may be necessary.  Good luck.

P.S.  I just received some Nigerian Bushel Gourd seed directly from Nigeria.  These were selected by friends I know.  Will offer seeds this winter.
