Tap Roots

What are these tap roots that you are suppose to cut?

Dennis,
You might as well cut them off because sooner or later while measuring the
pumpkin, adjusting the stem, or cutting tap roots you will break them off
anyway. As mentioned they will scar the surface of the pumpkin and scar
doesn't expand well as the pumpkin grows.
