Re: 1140 Stelts
Connie,
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.........
Maybe for some reason the 1140 this year just had problems, if you had grown
it last year and grew some decent size pumpkins.
I know the 991 Hunt is a good seed, but I grew that last year myself, and it
grew 'odd' shaped pumpkins that grew to 300lbs and shut down. I crossed it
with some 600lb seeds that I had that I knew grew good pumpkins, but still
had no success. So the 991 Hunt may be a tricky seed.
There are theories out there that the female pumpkin (in this case your
female was the 1140 Stelts) will produce the same basic shaped pumpkin no
matter what you cross it with for a male pollinator (this is only a theory)
.... but for your pumpkin to produce (1140 Stelts) peanut shaped pumpkins
that crack, I can't figure. It could be high heat in your area, what type
of weather have you had this year?
I myself (Sterling, Massachusetts) have had a bad year, first time in 7
seasons of growing AG's, this has been due to the extreme heat this year. I
couldn't get anything to 'set' this year...(and my plants have been the best
ever, I controlled the Vine Borer this year 100% which I have never been
able to control) finally I was just able to get some pumpkins to set (2
weeks ago) but this is far to late. Normally at this time of year I am
cutting off all my smaller pumpkins (100 to 150lb'ers +) to push all the
energy to my biggest pumpkins, but that didn't happen this year. We here in
Central Mass. had 15+days of 90 degree heat in July (normal is about 4) and
over 15 days of 90+ temps in August (normal is about 4 to 5) so as you can
see it's been a disasterous year... yet there are some growers in Mass that
have had success.
Keep up the spirits, try again next year. Hopefully 'Mother Nature' will be
more cooperative.

the 991 Hunt and another one with the 1007 Brown. Both look identical - 100
lb peanuts. Cracked.
