I agree. Measurements are only accurate to the 1/2-inch or 1/4-inch
depending on who is taking them and the surface upon which they are sitting.
For the official measurement, they should be sitting on level ground and the
basic rules should apply, namely:
1. make sure you don't have a prankster at the end of the tape (Yes, I mean
you John)
2. measure at the largest point parallel to the ground for circumference
3. then measure surface to surface at the largest point (straight line) from
stem to blossom
4. then repeat same for side to side.

Hi All.........
Just curious if there has ever been any discussion of a "standard" for
taking and stating OTT measurements. Specifically, how much accuracy
should be implied by the measure. Don't want to make a big deal over a
small thing, but, when you consider the odd shapes and ribbing of the
pumpkins as well as their resting positions on sloping or uneven ground, it
seems a bit ridiculous to state an OTT of 400.8 inches.
