Re: We crashed the Eastern Idaho State Fair...

Good morning all-

I started growing giant pumpkins about 4 years ago, with only ONE thing in mind, ALL that money I was going to make w/ a world record pumpkin-my sources said you could get as much as $10.00 per seed from a prized specimen such as this-Welllll, let me tell you, by the middle of my second year of this "hobby", things changed-  What with all the soil amending, ph testing, tilling and hauling manure, seed picking, transplanting those "little babies", which ones to keep, which ones to cull, finding your first female blossom, hand-pollinating-(the co-workers love to hear about this-"Pumpkin sex"-), cucumber beetles, white flys, Malathion, or Sevin??,  hauling 5-gallon buckets of MiracleGro out to the patch weekly, shading  this thing, soaker hoses, water timers, which vines to cut, which vines to bury, bleach washing any possible mildew off of your "BABY"-----NO AMOUNT OF MONEY IN THE WORLD COULD REPLACE THIS EXPERIENCE!!! It is not about money anymore---its about doing what I enjoy doing-out in the garden and meeting wonderful people like all of you, both online and in person. Good luck to all, and if nothing else our lives are "RICHER"-- just for having all this fun and experience!
All the best.......

Oh, well I'm not too concerned because you're going to
win it anyway, unless they judge on shape... ;-)

I started entering the Michigan State Fair 15 years ago and they paid 7 dollars. After seeing how much everyone loves the orange monsters they started raising the premium. It is now $200 for 1st place and they pay 7 places. I took a #255 pounder and won 4th place this year. That was good enough for $70. You are right though it isn't about the money. It is about seeing the smiles on someones face when they look at something you put your heart in. I love the questions, like how many years did it take this thing to get this big.
Have Fun!
Go Orange!
