Subject: That "Curly thing"

Does anyone know the answer to the question below? I got it from someone
who
says they "need to know".

"When a pumpkin grows it has a long curly cue tpye thing that grows
close to
or from the stem. I need to know what that is called."

Thanks,

Bob Matthews
