"Curly thing"
Mine are the Doctor Kevorkians of the patch, assisting in all sorts of
fatal detractions: twisting the sprinkler heads to the OFF position,
picking up rocks in one patch and throwing them at the pumpkins in the
other patch, where other tendrils pick up the rocks and throw them back,
grabbing huge leaves and holding them down until they turn brown,
tightening their hold on vines until they have restricted the life
coursing through the vine's veins.
On the other hand, yesterday we arrived at the patch to find a gopher,
barely alive, held tightly in the clutches of a tendril, and we have
known them to reach out and open the valves on the misting system during
100-degree weather.
Moral: Respect your tendrils.
